A lot of people think that when baking you can just get butter out of the fridge and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to bring it up to room temperature. However, this has its flaws as butter heats from the inside out when in the microwave. You end up with melted butter, which cannot be whipped until light and fluffy (what you need for the best baking results). To tackle this quickly, and especially in the winter cold, use a box grater to grate the butter onto a plate or board.
