TESCO MOBILE SCRAPS ‘DOUBLE CLUBCARD’ Tesco no longer lets Tesco Mobile customers double the monetary value of their Clubcard vouchers against their bills. It stopped the offer on 15 June, giving customers six months to use any remaining value before they expire. Tesco says there’s no change in the actual contract price, so you can’t cancel your contract without incurring an early-termination fee. BROWSE THE WEB AS YOU CRUISE THE SEAS Royal Caribbean has applied for permission to have satellite broadband on board its cruise ships. The company has asked the Federal Communications Commission in the US for approval to offer a service provided by Starlink, which is run by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. Starlink’s satellites can reach speeds of up to 250Mbps, much faster than the 3-5Mbps currently available…

Vodafone claims it has overtaken BT to become the UK’s “largest full-fibre broadband provider”. However, it’s not referring to its number of customers, but that it now offers Gigabit broadband through two networks – Openreach and CityFibre. This means it can deliver Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to more than eight million homes, a figure it says has been independently verified by Thinkbroadband (www.thinkbroadband.com). BT is actually the UK’s fourth largest full-fibre supplier according to the research, providing broadband to 7.2 million homes, behind Sky (7.3m) and TalkTalk (7.9m). Virgin Media delivers on its own cables to 1.1 million homes. However, Vodafone may itself be overtaken soon by other providers who also deliver their service over more than one network, including TalkTalk and Zen Internet. Energy rebate text con In Issue 633’s ‘Protect Your Tech’ you warned about scammers impersonating Ofgem. Well, they’re now sending text messages in a similar vein. I received a message saying I was ‘eligible for the government funded £400.00 energy bill rebate’ (pictured at www.snipca.com/42264). All I had to do was tap a link and then fill in an application form. It wasn’t a sophisticated scam, but I’m sure it’ll earn the criminal ‘masterminds’ a few bob because of how many people are entitled to the rebate. We’re delighted to say that Fitbit has refunded reader Mike Rogers in time for him to claim a discount of 40 per cent on a new fitness watch (see Issue 634). In March, Fitbit recalled its Ionic watch (pictured) because it “can overheat, posing a burn hazard” (see www.snipca.com/42117). Mike was keen to get a refund of £224 while the discounted offer on a Fitbit Sense watch was still live, and was worried that Fitbit still hadn’t sent the money two months after the recall had been announced. We’re used to tablets running Apple’s iPadOS or Google’s Android operating system (OS). However, Chinese manufacturer Huawei is still banned by the US government from using Google’s apps and services on its phones and tablets, so the company’s MatePad 11 uses its own HarmonyOS 2. Huawei claims this is a Google-free OS and – to all intents and purposes – that’s true. However, underneath it’s still a reworking of Android. “If you can live without Google, this is a stunning tablet” The biggest problem, therefore, is the absence of Google Play Store. We tested the first version of the OnePlus Nord CE back in Issue 610. Since then OnePlus has launched several Nord models (including the 2T, reviewed in Issue 634) and a second version of the Nord CE. This model is a cut-back version of the latter, with a launch price of under £280, making it the cheapest model in OnePlus’s current line-up. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 695 5G processor, alongside the Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (which is expandable if you pop in a microSD card). One tool that carries on syncing, though, is OneDrive, which can consume a lot of battery just when you need to preserve it. To stop this happening, open OneDrive from your taskbar, then click the Settings icon (cog), followed by Settings. Batch files are terrific time savers. These plain-text scripts, which let you string together several instructions and run them sequentially – as a batch – save you the chore of working your way through repetitive tasks. Although creating them might technically be considered ‘programming’, you don’t need any specialist software, and the commands you need to type are in plain English and easy to remember. When you run a batch file, Windows reads each line in turn, executes it, then moves to the next. Each line is running a standard command that you could type in Command Prompt. It looked useful, but when I tried to install it, Kaspersky warned me that it was trying to create an ‘embedded key or paramater in a protected registry key’. Does this mean it’s unsafe? The BBC must make more content available online in order to stay relevant in the digital age, Ofcom has said. It has proposed modernising the BBC’s Operating Licence so the broadcaster can “innovate and respond to changing audience needs” while still providing essential services. Currently, the BBC’s remit is too focused on providing TV and radio content, Ofcom said. In future, it wants the corporation to do more to make “important content” easier to find online. It gives examples as regional programming and ‘at-risk’ genres including arts, music and religion. Such changes will reflect the “increasingly important” role apps like BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds play in people’s lives, Ofcom said. WATCH OUT FOR… ‘BT direct debit’ scam emails What’s the threat? Scammers are impersonating BT in an attempt to trick customers into setting up a new direct debit because their old one “is no longer active”. They are sending emails under the headline ‘Avoid missing any payments’, claiming that “you don’t currently have an automatic payment method set up to deal with your bills”. Below this is a purple link titled ‘Set up a new Direct Debit’ (see screenshot). Clicking it takes you to a fake website which requests your personal and financial details. The scammers try to pressure you into clicking by saying you’ll be “charged a late payment fee” if you don’t update your details. A while back I had one of my ‘I don’t like Outlook’ moods, and chose eM Client (www.emclient.com) as my alternative, upgrading to the Pro lifetime version (£44.95) to put all my email accounts in one place. However, after a while I fell out with it because it didn’t directly synchronise with my Outlook calendar. I went back to Outlook. Dell used to offer plenty of configuration options with its desktop PCs, but has switched to a less flexible approach with some of its latest models. The XPS Desktop 8950 is a prime example of this, being part of a range of XPS models that are available with various specifications, though you can’t configure even the most basic of pre-build upgrades. While you can spend a small fortune on one of the latest Samsung S-series smartphones, the South Korean manufacturer also offers more affordable models in its A-series. The Galaxy A53 is a mid-range model, costing £399 at launch, though we’re already seeing it discounted on Amazon and elsewhere. Microsoft is now showing reminders to Windows 8.1 users that it will stop supporting the operating system on 10 January, 2023. When you see the notifications, you can click ‘Learn more’, ‘Remind me later’, or ‘Remind me after the end-of-support date’. After support ends, Microsoft will no longer release security updates for Windows 8.1, nor add new features to it. Also, there won’t be an extended support period for businesses and organisations that want to continue using the system (visit Microsoft’s site for details www.snipca.com/42405). 1.5TB MicroSD CARD IS WORLD’S BIGGEST US storage firm Micron has unveiled the world’s largest microSD card, at 1.5TB. Bit by bit, setting by setting, Mozilla has been boosting your privacy so adverts can’t use cookies to track you across different sites when you browse the web in Firefox. It’s been able to do this independently because it doesn’t use the Chromium source code that’s the basis for Chrome, Brave, Edge and others. First, in February 2021, it added Total Cookie Protection to the browser’s Strict Mode privacy option. Then, four months later, it turned on the feature so it worked in Private Browsing mode. Search old Scottish kirk sessions Following the 1560 Scottish reformation, the Church of Scotland (also known as the Kirk) was reorganised along Presbyterian lines. Each congregation elected its own minister and elders, who formed a ‘kirk session’ to manage the parish’s daily affairs and oversee discipline. While the churches handled the basic registration of baptisms, marriages and burials before civil registration in 1855, the kirk session papers can reveal more of what was going on behind the scenes. What is it? Pixel pitch (sometimes also called dot pitch) is used on some screens to describe the density of pixels. It’s simply the distance between the centre of one pixel and the centre of its neighbouring pixels. It’s directly linked to the resolution and size of a screen, so that a small screen with a high resolution will have a lower pixel pitch than a large screen with a low resolution. What’s it used for? It’s useful for comparing the pixel density of monitors. The one downside is that the latest monitors tend to have a miniscule pixel pitch, often down to fractions of millimetres, because even small screens now usually have very high resolutions. If space on your desktop is at a premium, it might be worth considering one of the smallest keyboards around. This is roughly 60 per cent of the size of a regular keyboard, and lacks the number pad and standard cursor-key arrangement. You do get number keys across the top row of the keyboard, and the cursor keys are tacked on to other keys – but you need to hold down a function key to use them. The keyboard is wired, so you have to connect it to a spare USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. The port on the keyboard itself is USB-C, so you could use this instead, but you’d need to supply your own cable or adapter. Once you plug it in, the keyboard works straight away.…

What is it? Apple’s largest iPad is currently the 12.9in iPad Pro (pictured). However, there are rumours of a new iPad in the pipeline that’s going to be even bigger – a whopping 14.1in across the diagonal. It’s recently been “confirmed” by analyst Ross Young on Twitter (www.snipca.com/42367), an expert on screen technology with a great track record of predicting products. What does it do? This will simply be an iPad with a larger screen. Everything will look bigger (good for watching videos), but it’s unlikely to be revolutionary. What’s the catch? Price. ANDROID & iOS Control who can see your data in WhatsApp WhatsApp has finally rolled out long-awaited privacy settings that let you control who can see your personal information. This includes your ‘Last seen’ status, profile photo and About data. Previously, you could choose to let everyone view this information, only your contacts or nobody, but the app now offers the option to exclude specific people. To access the new settings on your Android phone, tap the three-dot ‘More options’ icon and choose Settings, then Account and select Privacy. On your iPhone, tap Settings, Account, then Privacy. What is it? A new Bluetooth technology that lets you broadcast audio to an unlimited number of devices. It means you could transmit a song playing on your phone to other people, who’d be able to hear it on their own device. It potentially works on any device with Bluetooth 5.2: phone, tablet, TV, laptop, speakers, headphones, hearing aids and more. How it works was perfectly summed up by the feature’s previous name, Audio Sharing, but for some reason it’s now called Auracast. Who changed it? Compact discs are assumed to be an almost obsolete format, but – like vinyl records – they seem to be undergoing a revival.
