Most of the people I know—family, friends, neighbors—are good people. The people I work with here at Guideposts are good people. And I have never met a Guideposts reader I didn’t like. So I know you are good people too. Go ahead and tell me to take off my rose-colored bifocals, but I think the world has more good in it than bad because it has far more good people than bad ones. But there are bad ones out there for sure, and some of them have been trying to take advantage of you. And they are using our name to do it. She’s not only an avid runner, she plans her vacations around races! “My husband and I are taking a road trip from Texas to Canada this summer, with stops in Wisconsin and Michigan so I can do 10Ks,” Carmen says. FOR THE BIRDS Sitting on my porch with my coffee one morning, I watched a lone bluebird at the birdhouse I’d hung. He looks like he needs company. When I went inside I noticed that my coffee can was about the same size as the birdhouse. Maybe I could build a few houses so the bluebird would have friends. I had plenty of cans lying around. I cleaned them thoroughly, then gave them a coat of spray paint, cut entrance holes, added perches and put each one on a post. I had enough cans for a whole village. BITTER NO MORE Roberta Messner’s What Prayer Can Do (November 2014) came at the right time. Just as she was let go from her longtime photo-stylist job, I was dropped from the substitute-teacher list after 35 years with the same school district, 29 of them as a full-time teacher. FOUL WEATHER FRIEND Storm clouds were gathering when I left work, smothering the sunset. By the time I got home, just before my husband, the first fat drops were falling, splattering on the windshield. Safely inside, I listened to the rain become a torrent. Then the thunder started up. Wind shook the windows so hard I was sure it would pull down some power lines. Lightning ripped the sky. I shivered and thought of my children, my two grown sons. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Cut the cauliflower florets into 1-inch pieces and combine them with the garlic in a large bowl. Drizzle them with the olive oil and toss to coat. In a small bowl, combine tur-meric, cumin, pepper flakes and salt. Sprinkle herb mixture over the cauliflower and toss to coat. Spread the cauliflower out on a large, rimmed baking sheet. Bake, stirring occasionally, until the cauliflower is browned on the edges and tender, 23 to 27 minutes. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with the cilantro (if using) and serve hot. Serves 5.
