All dinos had claws and tails. Some had horns, bony plates, or spiky armour! The biggest dinosaur was Argentinosaurus. It was as long as three school buses and as tall as a six-storey building! Most dinosaurs ate plants. Some ate meat. Dinos likely made low growling and cooing sounds. Some dinos had feathers. They were related to the birds of today. All baby dinosaurs hatched from eggs. Dinos sometimes swallowed rocks to help grind up their food. Dinosaur fossils have been found all over the world. Flying reptiles like pterosaurs and water reptiles like plesiosaurs lived with dinos, but they were not dinosaurs. True dinosaurs lived on land. You’ll need: • mittens • felt• buttons• scissors• fabric glue What to do: 1 Cut dino body parts like scales, horns, or plates out of felt. 2 Glue the parts onto the mitten. 3 Glue on buttons for eyes. Let the glue dry, and then you can play with your dinosaur puppet! Some dinosaurs had hard crests on their heads. Dilophosaurus had two! Scientists are still learning what the crests were for. You’ll need: • salt dough or clay• wax paper• toy dinosaur What to do: 1 Press the dough or clay onto the wax paper. 2 Press the toy into the dough. Gently lift it out. 3 Leave the dough to dry overnight. What do you see the next day? How it works When the toy is pressed into the soft dough, it makes an imprint. When the dough hardens, the imprint stays. Dino footprint fossils were made in a similar way! When dinosaurs stepped in mud, they left imprints behind. How big are they? About the size of a cat. What do they eat? Aquatic insects, shellfish, and worms. Where do they live? Rivers, ponds, and streams in eastern Australia. Super Swimmer Platypuses have webbed feet, flat tails, and waterproof fur to help them zip through water easily. Big Bill Platypuses use their bills to find food. They can sense movement from insects and other prey underwater. Excellent Eggs Most mammals don’t lay eggs. But platypuses do! Moms sit on the eggs to keep them safe and warm. You’ll need: • 625 mL (2½ cups) flour• 2 mL (½ tsp.) baking powder• 1 mL (¼ tsp.) salt• 250 mL (1 cup) powdered sugar• 175 mL (¾ cup) butter, softened• 1 egg, beaten• 5 mL (1 tsp.) vanilla extract• 4 drops food colouring (optional)• nuts or seeds What to do: 1 Stir the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together. 2 Stir in the butter, egg, and vanilla, to make a dough. Then refrigerate it for 30 minutes. 3 Form small chunks of dough into dinosaur feet. 4 Press nuts or seeds onto the feet for claws. 5 Bake at 190°C (375°F) for 10 minutes, or until golden.
