The law is clear: holding or using a phone, sat nav, tablet, âor any other device that can send or receive dataâ while youâre driving is illegal. Thatâs still true if youâre queuing in traffic, have stopped at lights, are sitting behind the wheel of a car that shuts down its engine while stopped, or supervising a learner.
There are a few exceptions, like when youâre safely parked or you need to call emergency services and stopping would be unsafe or impractical â but, in general, what you can do with devices while driving is extremely limited. The penalties are significant, starting at six points and a ÂŁ200 fine, rising to ÂŁ1,000 and a driving ban.
