The Government has announced new measures to make the 999 emergency-call system more reliable, following major disruption last year.
Problems on Saturday 25 June 2023 meant that 11,470 calls to 999 were “unsuccessfully connected”.
BT, which runs the 999 network, blamed a “complex software issue” that caused calls to be routed incorrectly before disconnecting the caller. It was the first serious incident since the 999 system launched in 1937.
It apologised for the problems, and says it has now built a “highly robust” network to avoid a repeat.
Since the disruption, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has worked with BT, emergency services and other Government departments to “identify the lessons learnt and put in place immediate measures to prevent a recurrence”.
