The UK’s data watchdog isn’t doing its job – that’s according to a recent letter demanding an inquiry into failures of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to act after data breaches. Not that any of this is new. The ICO set the tone as a watchdog without teeth when it failed to fine Google for slurping up Wi-Fi credentials in 2013, giving it a slap on the wrist and a demand to delete the data. Google learned from that and never collected data accidentally ever again – oh wait, remember DeepMind, the Royal Free Hospital and the kidney app debacle? SCORE PRICE £916 (£1,099 inc VAT) from hp.com Whether you buy this 14in model or the OmniBook X Flip 16 opposite, the idea is much the same: a businesslike 2-in-1 convertible that’s differentiated from rivals thanks to an OLED panel and aggressive price. This spec, which includes a 2,880 x 1,800 panel, is generally on sale for £1,099 inc VAT, even dropping to £899 on Black Friday – and that’s a terrific deal bearing in mind the quality on offer. You even get a stylus thrown in. The quality stems from the aluminium chassis, which HP proudly claims uses “20% post-consumer recycled plastics and recycled metals”. SCORE PRICE £583 (£700 inc VAT) from scan.co.uk BenQ targets the PV3200U at video editors and content creators, and as you can spend a small fortune on high-end monitors for content production it’s tempting: a colour-accurate 32in 4K IPS panel with built-in 2.1 speakers for £700 sounds like a bargain. That temptation is reinforced by the specs, with BenQ promising 95% DCI-P3 coverage, Calman Verified accreditation plus a wireless puck to jump between settings and sources. Every inch is finished in a dark charcoal grey, and the result is a smart, unassuming monitor. The plastic construction feels lightweight, but I have no complaints about the stand. Ample adjustability comes via the tubular design and wide base, which provide stable support for the screen, and you get 115mm of smooth height…

SCORE PRICE £583 (£700 inc VAT) from motorola.com Following on from the £1,100 Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge (see issue 371, p75) and £999 iPhone Air (see issue 375, p68), it seems that super-thin phones are the latest bandwagon for manufacturers to leap onto. Motorola has form with its £600 Edge 60 Pro (see issue 371, p74), not to mention the Edge 60, which has dropped to £299. Safe to say I had high expectations for this late 2025 update. It started well. At 5.9mm thick, the Edge 70 is so thin that I felt duty-bound to protect it with the rigid plastic in-box case, thereby mitigating the benefits of a slender mobile in the first place. SCORE PRICE 4TB (tested), £400 (£480 inc VAT) from scan.co.uk The Corsair MP700 Pro SE is Corsair’s second-generation PCIe 5.0 SSD – evidently the company has decided that the original MP700 Pro, released back in 2023, no longer cuts the mustard. Although this drive has the same base hardware as its previously released sibling, both the controller and flash are upgraded, and it now comes with an optional heatsink or liquid cooling. The drive is offered in 2TB and 4TB capacities only, both of which claim read speeds of up to 14,000MB/sec, thanks to controller manufacturer Phison’s latest “Max14um” platform (get it?). The Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 is quite a bit cheaper than any rival whether in its 1TB or 2TB capacity. There are no 4TB or 8TB options, however, which rules the Exceria out if you’re looking for a capacious drive. The Exceria Plus G4 comes with a five-year warranty covering up to 600TB of data written per terabyte of capacity – a fine provision but unremarkable in this month’s company. Kioxia’s SSD Utility software lets you monitor the drive’s state and health in real-time, and handles firmware updates, password protection and secure erase. SCORE PRICE 8TB (tested), £600 (£720 inc VAT) from scan.co.uk Samsung’s 9100 Pro SSD is one of only three SSDs this month to come in a huge 8TB capacity – and it’s far cheaper than the others. It’s also reasonably priced in the 4TB size, although the 2TB and 1TB models are less competitive. While most SSDs use bought-in controller chips and flash memory, Samsung designs and manufactures its own, meaning the 9100 Pro has a distinctive performance profile. That starts with claimed sequential read speeds of 14,700MB/sec for the 2TB model – a little faster than most – and a small boost to 14,800MB/sec for the 8TB version. Printers have become significantly cheaper over the years, but there’s still plenty of scope to make an expensive mistake. Go for the wrong balance of features or performance and you might find yourself needing a replacement before too long. Meanwhile, forgetting to factor in running costs could come back to haunt you every time you buy a toner. Fear not; we’re here to guide you. Start by having a clear idea of why you’re buying. If it’s just to print off the odd email, you might get away with a single-function device, but otherwise we’d usually recommend a multifunction peripheral (MFP). We tested the MF664Cdw, which offers print, scan and copying; for about another £40 the MF667Cdw adds fax. Both come with a 250-sheet paper cassette and single-page bypass slot, together with duplex printing as standard. On top of both models you’ll find an ADF with a generous 50-page capacity. It’s a compact device, but it’s also surprisingly affordable. For around £120 exc VAT you get a 20 pages per minute (ppm) laser printer, topped off by a scanner with an automatic document feeder (ADF). Not only that, Brother throws in USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity. There almost has to be a catch; delve into the specifications and you’ll find it. Neither the ADF nor printer support automatic duplexing, which is a shame, and the DCP-L1660W arrives with a paltry 350-page “inbox” toner – not enough to cover a single ream. In previous Pixma lineups, models beginning with a “7” have tended to be relatively premium, but we found the TS7550i online for £71 exc VAT. That’s quite aggressive pricing, undercutting similar rivals from several competitors. The TS7550i is identical to the Pixma TS6550i (see p88) aside from having a 35-sheet automatic document feeder plonked on top. This version also doesn’t support wireless networks – for that you’ll need to spend another £30 on the PA2101cwx. The PA2101cx is an upright, sensible-looking device. I haven’t written an article focused on AI since issue 353, when naturally I talked mostly about the television series Quantum Leap and its AI Ziggy. There’s a line in our interview with Cory Doctorow this month (see p44) that’s been bugging me since I read it. “I think that, as a consumer, there’s not much you can do,” he said of the notion of voting with your feet, of leaving the services that hook you in, hike prices and make the service worse. All internet users will recognise that things are getting worse online. Google searches now require scrolling through AI word soup and sponsored adverts at the top of results, while Facebook has become a morass of promotions and ads. The big surprise is the price. For £1,149 inc VAT, a bright, colour-accurate OLED touchscreen in such a well-built chassis is something of a coup. They don’t want to fiddle with desk lamps or switch on overhead lighting, they just want to focus. As ever with a new generation of technology, it’s taken time for the next generation of PCI Express to arrive en masse. But now, at last, we think it’s safe to say that PCIe Gen5 SSDs are the right choice for upgraders and enthusiasts, and here we put eight of the best to the test. The Crucial T705 starts with a 1TB model that’s cheaper than anything else in its class, aside from the cost-cutting Kioxia. The 2TB model, meanwhile, undercuts the Corsair by almost 30%, while the 4TB model is terrific value at only £281, including the heatsink. SCORE PRICE 4TB (tested), £280 (£336 inc VAT) from amazon.co.uk Lexar has produced good-value SSDs in the past, but with this one it depends on the size you go for: while the 4TB model is a compelling deal, the 1TB and 2TB versions are slightly more expensive than the equivalent Acer Predator GM9000 models, which use the same controller and flash chips. There are a few technical differences between this and the Acer SSD. The Lexar’s five-year warranty covers up to 700TB written per terabyte – 100TB less than the Acer – but the Lexar is a little more power-efficient, thanks to the use of ultra-low-voltage LPDDR4x rather than regular LPDDR4. SCORE PRICE 2TB (tested), £192 (£230 inc VAT) from scan.co.uk Though last alphabetically, WD takes an unquestioned first place in this month’s SSD stakes. The WD Black SN8100 outshines all rivals with chart-topping performance and excellent efficiency, and it’s available in a full stack of sizes from 1TB up to an enormous 8TB (although we could only find the 8TB drive at shop.sandisk.com). The SN8100 uses the same core components as the Kingston Fury Renegade G5, but raises the performance ante to 14,900MB/sec for sequential reads – faster than any other SSD on test. SCORE PRICE £64 (£77 inc VAT) from ballicom.co.uk Canon’s TS6550i sits in the middle of the three new Pixma models released just ahead of this test. As with many product lineups, that’s typically the sweet spot where you’d expect to find the best combination of features and value. The TS6550i certainly scores well for the latter; while it’s not a particularly highly specified device, it is very affordable, undercutting similar models from rivals. The Pixma TS6550i offers a control panel with a mono screen, which immediately distinguishes it from the screen-less Pixma TS4150i reviewed on p91. It’s a boxy inkjet multifunction peripheral, all hard black plastics and jutting out surfaces. Only the neat and uncluttered control panel with its 6.8cm colour touchscreen adds a touch of class. However, it’s a well specified device, offering print, scan, copy and fax functions, together with dual paper trays and a 20-sheet automatic document feeder. It also supports both wired and wireless networks. That’s a good set of features for a busy home office, and its appeal is helped by reasonable running costs. SCORE PRICE £233 (£280 inc VAT) from amazon.co.uk Epson’s EcoTank ET-2950 is a relatively basic multifunction peripheral, offering print, scan and copy functionality. While automatic duplex printing is standard, it comes with a simple 100-sheet rear paper tray – a little bit galling given that the closely related EcoTank ET-4956 (see p89) has a larger enclosed cassette. This MFP also does without an automatic document feeder, so if you want multi-page copies or scans you’ll need to shuffle the paper around yourself. SCORE PRICE £251 exc VAT from solwise.co.uk As an early entrant into the Wi-Fi 7 market, EnGenius boasts an impressive portfolio of access points, and its latest ECW520 claims to offer SMBs a high-performing solution at an affordable price point. It certainly has the hardware to handle high demand: it’s powered by the same Qualcomm Networking Pro 1220 platform and quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 CPU as EnGenius’ flagship ECW536 (see issue 365, p98). That holds it back from top-tier performance: Acer claims sequential read and write speeds of 14,000MB/sec and 13,000MB/sec respectively, which are strong even when compared to this month’s competition. The drive comes in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, with the five-year warranty covering 800TB of writes per terabyte of capacity. That’s a good deal – we’re more used to seeing 600TB per terabyte, giving this drive an edge for intensive workloads. We always like to look to the future at PC Pro, but sometimes it simply doesn’t make sense to buy cutting-edge components. That’s especially true if your equipment can’t take advantage of them. Put someone in a room with 12 printers for long enough, and they’ll start running out of things to talk about. That was certainly the case with this group test, which resulted in something like 80 scanned pictures, 120 photocopies and 1,500 pages of printing, all conducted over the course of a week.
