GET GROWING! What is hair made of? What makes it grow curly instead of straight? Does hair serve a purpose? Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. This protein is also found in fingernails, toenails, and some organs. Each strand of hair grows out of a tiny sac, called a follicle. Blood vessels deliver nutrients to the follicle (through blood!) and help hair to grow. But spoiler alert—we’re not constantly growing hair. The hair on your head grows in cycles. First up is the anagen phase (or growing stage). This stage lasts from two to six years, with hair growing from 0.5 to 2 cm (0.2 to 0.8 in.) per month. Next is the catagen phase. Safal wanted to find out if there was a safe, gentle way for an elevator to slowly lower to the ground floor without using electricity. So she built a mini elevator and started experimenting with magnets! First she built a mini cardboard elevator. She used doorknobs to make a pulley so the elevator could move up and down. The elevator was at one end of the pulley and Safal used very strong magnets on the other end, which countered its weight. The magnets travelled up and down a conductive copper pipe, creating a magnetic field (a force created by the push and pull of a magnet). Like anywhere the land meets the sea, Forillon National Park is a place where erosion happens. Erosion occurs when forces like wind and flowing water wear down—and even remove—rocks and soil. This is a natural process, but over the last few decades, the erosion has become much worse in Forillon. WARMING CLIMATE Climate change is one cause of increasing erosion in the park.
