More than one in four UK homes – around eight million – can now get 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) broadband, Ofcom has said.
The figure comes from the regulator’s Connected Nations report for 2020 (www.snipca.com/37028), which examines broadband and mobile availability across the UK, focusing on the differences between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Gigabit is most widespread in Northern Ireland, available to 56 per cent of households. Scotland comes second with 42 per cent, followed by England (25 per cent) and Wales (19 per cent).
Throughout the UK, 27 per cent of homes can get Gigabit broadband, while 96 per cent can get ‘superfast’ connections, which Ofcom defines as 30Mbps and over.
