Boating is the world's foremost magazine for boating enthusiasts. Written by experts for those who love the sport, the editorial covers the waterfront -- from runabouts to sportfish convertibles to luxury showpieces, and everything in between.
A whopping 172 pages, this is our biggest Boat Buyers Guide yet. In it, we present you with 72 boats, more than we’ve ever brought you before. The 54 videos that accompany many of them also represent the highest number we’ve produced for the annual Boat Buyers Guide. Biggest, more than ever, highest—superlatives such as these prove treacherous in use. They require verifiable certainty, lest our reputation fall. Best means better than any other, not just good. Most means more than any other, not just many. The tricky part resides in the “any.” If just one thing, no matter how obscure, turns out better or exhibits more, well then the user of the superlative—that advocate of the absolute—may find egg on their face. More importantly, they do not serve their…
How long have you been a captain? For over 15 years. I started teaching sailing about 20 years ago, and there was a cute guy—now my husband—on a 103-foot yacht who kept getting in the way of my classes. He and his crew needed someone to help them make a delivery, so they asked me. It turns out, I knew what I was doing, so I stayed on full time. Now I just yell on the internet. Were you one of the earliest boating influencers? That can’t be. But I know I’m in a unique position in that I get to be a professional captain and also do things on Facebook and Instagram that make boating fun and accessible. I also give talks at boat shows and yacht clubs, and…

The Sea Tow Foundation, which offers loaner life jackets at 1,300 places in all 50 states, recently got a lot more to offer thanks to Newell Brands, which donated 10,000 of its Stearns and Coleman life jackets and floating cushions to the organization. The Sea Tow Foundation is a nonprofit organization that promotes boating safety founded by the membership towing service Sea Tow. Along with programs such as Sober Skipper and Flare Education, the foundation seeks to make it easier for boaters to practice safety on the water. The Life Jacket Loaner program provides adult and youth life jackets that are free to borrow for a day on the water. So far, it has provided over 100,000 life jackets to participating businesses and organizations around the country. But this past…
If there’s one element of the weather that all boaters like to keep an eye on, it’s wind. Wind speed and direction candictate how the local marine conditions will be and whether to expect calm or rough seas. There are plenty of apps available to help boaters make informed decisions about the current and future weather conditions, but PredictWind can help make accurate local determinations on a global scale. I downloaded the PredictWind app for a recent Florida fishing trip where I knew I’d be heading offshore each day. There is a free version and three different pay versions, ranging from basic to professional. I upgraded to the basic pay version ($29 a year) to give it a test. The free and the pay versions all rely on nine different…
