The multitude of directories in a Linux installation can be quite confusing at times, so here is a brief rundown. /usr is used by the OS, and this is where the package manager installs most of its files. Do not be tempted to install or modify files in here as your changes could well be overwritten by future updates. Most programs have the option of altering the default configurations and other files by placing them in /etc, which takes priority over /usr in these cases. Systemd relies heavily on this, and the man pages show how you can override just about anything this way. If you’re installing software from source, the default location is /usr/local. This has the same directory structure as /usr, but is not affected by package managers.…

It is this neglect (and to a lesser extent users not upgrading) that leads to the characteristically fragmented Android ecosystem that we know today. A quick glance at https://statcounter.com will show you that some 35% of devices are running Android 14 (the latest), with the previous couple of releases not too far behind. Depending on what you’re used to, LineageOS might seem anywhere between indistinguishable or drastically different from your phone’s previous OS. Using the Compute Module 5 means that users should be able to configure their laptop RAM and eMMC by swapping out the CM5 module. One of the best features of the Vim text editor is its extensibility with the aid of plugins. It probably won’t surprise you, then, to learn that Vim offers a plugin to help you quickly draw a whole multitude of shapes. Some Linux distros now offer Vim-tiny instead of the full-blown Vim editor, which is often criticised for being too overwhelming for new users. The minimalist variant of Vim offers a limited number of features, however, so you might want to install the full version from your software repositories when you start working with Vim’s plugins. The general, quick and dirty method presented in this and next month’s tutorial is perfect for occasional bulk generation of ODF documents, and for learning about all their components in a concrete, practical way. Sooner or later, however, people needing to do heavy ODF processing on a regular basis will have to graduate to something more powerful than what is presented here. In principle, since ODF is basically a zipped archive of assorted XML files, any XML library or program could be used to process ODF files, and there are so many tools that is impossible to master them all. Former Amazon vice president Ethan Evans has admitted that “Goliath lost” in the company’s attempts to disrupt the gaming platform Steam. In a LinkedIn post, Evans catalogued Amazon’s failures over 15 years, such as the tech giant’s failed attempt to scale up Reflexive Entertainment After Amazon’s acquisition of Twitch, Evans noted that the company also created its own PC games store under the mistaken assumption that users already connected to Twitch would then buy their games from Amazon directly. QUBES OS 4.2.4 This ultra-secure OS uses Xen-based virtualisation to compartmentalise sensitive data on your machine. This means you can have one browser dedicated to online shopping, for instance, and another for work-related emails running completely isolated from each other. The latest release is based on Debian 12 and contains revisions to GUI apps like Qubes Global Settings, as well as the interface for creating new qubes (virtual machines). Linus Torvalds announced the seventh (and likely final) Release Candidate for what will be Linux 6.14. As we covered during the merge window (period of early development when disruptive changes land), the new kernel includes driver enhancements, particularly for AMD GPUs and AI-related integrated NPUs. It also includes the new ntsync driver to speed up Windows emulation in Wine. In fact, a late breaking development on the latter identified that it was by default only available to the root user, prior to a trivial one-liner patch that changes permissions on the device file used to access it. Pop!_OS is a sophisticated desktop Linux OS aimed at technology experts. The developers are currently working on a custom desktop environment written in Rust, but development has been slow. As a result, the current stable release is based on Ubuntu 22.04, which is quite out of date now, and you might be unable to install some software on it. Xubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavour based around the Xfce desktop environment. We’re fans of that environment, but it hasn’t been updated in a while. Much like replacing any operating system, replacing your mobile OS is not something you should even think about unless you’ve backed up anything important from your device. The main storage will be completely wiped, and you should probably remove your SD card (if you’re not going to back up everything on it elsewhere) to ensure its data survives. These days, many people use Google Authenticator (or a less Googley service) for two-factor authentication. This is great but if those codes disappear, you lose access to everything. So, make sure you have backup paper codes, or move the authenticator to a new device. One that you’re not about to wipe. If you look carefully at PostmarketOS’s devices page, you’ll see that the ubiquitous Raspberry Pi is supported. In fact, the whole range of Pis are supported, although the 32-bit ones (the Zero, 1 and 2 with armhf architectures) probably won’t be for much longer – and also aren’t recommended due to resource constraints. You can also run LineageOS on a Raspberry Pi, but if you want to run anything newer than version 17 (based on Android 10.1), you’ll need a Pi 4. At a high level, many of the enhancements stem from the upgraded tensor cores in the Blackwell architecture. The biggest change is native support for the FP4 (4-bit floating-point) data type, with throughput that’s twice as high as the prior generation’s FP8 compute. The OpenDocument Format for Office Documents (ODF) was developed, beginning in December 2002, by an industry consortium called Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). The first version of ODF was approved in 2006 as an international standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which was a big deal because ISO/IEC compliance is mandatory for many public administrations worldwide. Successive releases of ODF, whose version 1.4 is under development on GitHub, added several features to improve accessibility and support for digital signatures, encryption, change-tracking and interoperability. The chips we look at in the main part of this article were mostly produced by existing computer manufacturers, or by companies specifically set up to address the RISC market. But the established players in the CISC market also ventured into producing RISC processors. Motorola formed part of the consortium responsible for the hugely successful PowerPC. The testing journey begins with the initial build, setup and calibration, assessing the ease of the process. While some printers can be up and running within minutes, others may require far more time and effort before they are ready. Now you have a good understanding of the game code, you can start customising play. One of the simplest ways to do this is by tweaking the game’s starting values to alter the difficulty. For instance, if you change the value of MBomb% on line 2260 of the original code from MBomb%=Start%+6 to say MBomb%=Start%+8, this increases the maximum number of alien bombs on screen from six to 12. A big difference between Rust and most other programming languages is the concept of ownership for complex types such as String, Vec or Struct. In this code, s1 is assigned a string value “Hello”. Then s2 gets the value from s1. Nothing unusual there, you might think, but you would be wrong. Other programming languages would say that you’d copied s1 to s2, and print s1. Rust doesn’t; it moved the value from s1 to s2, and s2 now has the value and owns it; s1 is no longer valid. The compiler won’t compile the println! line as the screenshot (top of page) shows. Brother printers have traditionally enjoyed a solid reputation for reliability, with none of the vendor lock-in found with other brands. According to YouTuber and right-to-repair advocate Louis Rossman, this may have changed, as he claims to have uncovered proof that the company may have degraded print quality for those using third-party cartridges. In a statement to ArsTechnica, Brother explicitly stated that it does not block third-party ink from its machines, though it recommends using genuine Brother cartridges. “Starting with Mesa 25.1, Nouveau users will no longer get the old Nouveau OpenGL driver by default and will instead get Zink+NVK. Unlike most OpenGL drivers, which are written to target the underlying hardware directly, Zink is an OpenGL implementation written on top of Vulkan. We’ve been talking about this for a while but finally landed the merge request. If we did this right, most users wouldn’t notice beyond getting a slightly more stable experience with better performance. Zink has matured a lot since the initial blog post in 2018. Reading this magazine, you are probably already aware that Android is based on Linux. If you’ve ever used an Android smartphone, though, you’ll also be aware that it doesn’t exactly look or feel particularly Linux-ey. Or maybe that’s just us. Anyway, rest assured that behind all those pretty Java (OK, fine, Kotlin) apps, a Linux kernel and userspace are running the show. Specifically the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which is an operating system in itself, albeit a rather minimal one. Google apps packages have to be installed immediately after a new OS is installed, otherwise they won’t work. The Googley bits have to be on there before any user data. You’ll find links to the required packages at https://wiki.lineageos.org/gapps/ for each Android version (and 32-bit and 64-bit ARM architectures). For clarity, it’s entirely possibly to have Play Services (and associated Google apps) installed without signing into a Google account. Retro is the in thing, and since the early days of the Raspberry Pi, it’s been something of a retro gaming machine. The original Pi offered an analogue-compatible composite video output (the old yellow RCA port) but modern Pis are digital only, which means old-school CRTs lost support, until now. A detailed post from Raspberry Pi outlines how using the new Digital Parallel Interface (DPI) and a bit of external component magic, it’s possible to recreate a full analogue interlaced video output that can drive old CRT displays; specifically classic VGA and RGB-Scart interfaces. CheerLights is a simple Internet of Things (IoT) project that has a goal of being the Hello World of IoT, and a great way to show how one simple command can reach thousands of devices across the globe. It was created by Hans Scharler, and while it is a fantastic way to demonstrate IoT, it is also a remarkably simple means to connect people around the world. In 1980, mainstream processors were typified by the Intel 8086 and 8088, the first of the x86 chips, and representing the CISC philosophy. Yet this was the year in which a RISC project came into being at the University of California, Berkeley. Led by David Patterson – whom we have to thank for the term RISC – the project’s aim was to create a RISC processor. Simulations showed that it would offer similar performance to the DEC VAX/780 high-powered minicomputer. Silicon for the chip, RISC I, was delivered in 1982 and, although it actually ran more slowly than the VAX, it gave the team confidence to progress an upgraded design, RISC II. Cybercriminals are using GitHub to target children with infostealing malware, a new McAfee report has claimed, saying it spotted an ongoing malicious campaign on the popular code repository. In an analysis, the researchers said they observed many repositories pretending to be game hacks, cracks or free versions of otherwise commercial software. However, instead of providing these programs, the repositories were actually hosting Lumma Stealer, a known infostealer malware. Cracks and keygens have been a well-known vector for hacking attacks and cryptominers. This latest move sees famous games such as Roblox, Minecraft, Apex Legends and GTA V being offered. This “network of repositories”, as McAfee described it, changes the description every week, and creates new repositories, as the old ones get flagged and removed by GitHub. Originally, the file output the card suit using Unicode characters; however, it was a bit messy reading those, so we modified it to output text characters instead – ace of diamonds is AD, and so on. So, we want the program to do two slightly different things: 1. Use the test_card_hands.txt file and print the cards and the result. 2. Use 1000_card_hands.txt and print how long it takes on average to evaluate a hand. In both cases, we still pass in the filename, but we can have the program handle the second case by setting a feature. To do this, we use the Cargo Features capability to add show_ cards.
