CRISP DAYS, COOL NIGHTS, TREES FESTOONED WITH CROWNS OF CRIMSON, GOLD, AND RUSSET. Fall is here, and oh, how I love it! Every year my family and I take a drive to our local apple orchard where we stock up on Golden Delicious and Honeycrisps. We haul a wagon into the pumpkin patch to pick out the prettiest ghostly white and flaming orange pumpkins we can find. Then we wrap up our autumn adventure with hot cider and sugary sweet doughnuts. But the fun doesn’t end at the orchard. We invite the season into our home by decorating our front stoop with the harvested pumpkins along with containers overflowing with mums, asters, and kale. FRIENDLY APPROACH The front door defines an entry. Make it shine with a wreath made from Japanese lantern pods, opposite. Weave the pod stems into a ready-made grapevine wreath for color in a jiffy. Tuck in small bunches of seeded eucalyptus, applying dabs of hot glue as needed to secure. FALL TRIMMINGS Festoon railings or columns with a homemade garland crafted from hemp-wrapped coiled wire, baby gourds, and seeded eucalyptus leaves, above. Create a channel for the coiled wire by hammering a wood skewer (cut in half) into each gourd. Wrap tape around the end of the coiled wire to prevent unraveling, then thread on gourds. Space the gourds roughly every 10 inches along the wire; hold in place by lightly bending the wire on both sides of the gourd.…
