Can a firm refuse full refund because of Covid?

Q I bought a dinosaur-dragon toy for £44.98 from Magoloft (www.magoloft.com, pictured) for my granddaughter, paying by Mastercard, but it doesn’t work. The site initially offered half my money back, not a full refund. The reason it gave was that it’s not accepting returns because of the pandemic, and therefore couldn’t check whether the toy was faulty. I refused this offer, and now the site won’t reply. Can they use Covid as an excuse?

A No they can’t. Yes, the pandemic is affecting all companies, big and small, and some deliveries or refunds may take longer, but that doesn’t mean websites can refuse to take returns.
