The LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) distro is a less mainstream version than the standard Ubuntu edition, with its own package repositories but without PPA compatibility and lacking some other features. As you may have guessed, it uses the Debian package base, along with the Cinnamon environment, and is really for experienced Linux Mint veterans.
Based on Debian Testing, LMDE is faster than standard Linux Mint (‘Mint Main’), and runs newer packages. Updates are released first for LMDE, before being tested, evaluated, and rolled out to the mainstream edition. A deeper knowledge of package managers is required, so LMDE is unsuitable for Linux Mint newcomers, but ideal for hardcore community users and Linux veterans.
