By and large, big numbers are better where quality is concerned. A 1080 resolution video will comprise 1080 horizontal rows of pixels, a 720 resolution video will be 720, and so on. The number of columns is calculated with reference to the aspect ratio of the picture, such as 16:10, 4:3 and so on, to keep everything in proportion. The ‘i’ and ‘p’ that follow the number of rows describes the order in which the horizontal rows are drawn on screen, with ‘i’ standing for interlaced, and ‘p’ for progressive.
