Virgin Media has connected more than one million homes in the West Midlands to gigabit broadband, claiming it’s the UK’s biggest ever roll-out-of-ultra-fast broadband.
The service, called Gig1Fibre, will be delivered to premises in Coventry, Birmingham and the surrounding areas, providing speeds of 1,104Mbps (1.1Gbps), more than 20 times faster than the UK average of 54Mbps.
On average speeds, downloading a 4K film of20 gigabytes would take an hour. By contrast, downloading it on Virgin’s service would take just over three minutes. The company will send customers a new HUB 4.0 router (pictured) to cope with the faster speeds.
However, the service is considerably more expensive than most other packages available, costing from £62a month, which is £744 a year.
Gigabit broadband is defined as speeds of at least 1Gbps.…
